Mathematical Thinking and Reproducible Computation

The first SRAI Production Unit establishes precise definitions, explicit assumptions, computational verification and reproducible evidence.

01 / LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Reason clearly before automating.

  1. Distinguish a mathematical model from the reality it represents.
  2. State variables, assumptions, objectives, constraints and omissions.
  3. Build a computational experiment another analyst can reproduce.
  4. Verify mathematical expectations with numerical tests.
  5. Separate computational verification from real-world validation.
  6. Connect evidence to an accountable decision.

02 / THEORY TO DECISION

Every transition carries a responsibility.

01

Reality

Define the real system, population or decision.

02

Abstraction

Decide what matters and what is deliberately omitted.

03

Model

State variables, relationships, constraints and assumptions.

04

Algorithm

Specify the procedure that converts the model into a result.

05

Python

Execute the procedure consistently in a controlled environment.

06

Verification

Confirm that the intended model was implemented correctly.

07

Interpretation

Explain what the output means—and what it does not mean.

08

Decision

Combine evidence, uncertainty, context and human judgment.

03 / WORKED MODEL

A small model with fully inspectable reasoning.

The notebook uses the illustrative linear demand model D(T) = β₀ + β₁T, with baseline demand β₀ = 120 and temperature sensitivity β₁ = 2.5.

Assumptions, code, expected results, tests, limitations and decision consequences belong in the same analytical record.

VERIFIED OUTPUTS
TemperaturePredicted demand
20°C170.0
25°C182.5
30°C195.0

One-degree sensitivity: 2.5 units

VERIFICATION

Did we solve the stated model correctly?

Assertions and numerical sensitivity checks establish that the code implements the specified model.

VALIDATION

Is the model adequate for the intended reality?

That requires relevant data, institutional knowledge, uncertainty assessment and examination of consequences.
